Investigative Journalism - A Survival of Print Media in Digital Era

By Edward Kinabo

The MISA TAN & VIKES Internet Training for Editors and Trainers started from March 7 to March 11, 2011 has, among other lessons, posed a fact that the world has changed and it is still changing very fast.

The digital revolution of internet technologies; websites, blogs and fast search engines like google, yahoo, and alexa has so far played a significant role in changing the world. In general, the changes are positive as they make  life of human beings at ease - now nearly everything can be done directly or facilitated by internet.

However, there are some negatives associated with these changes and one of the most alarming one is the shocking future of our print media. It is obvious and the growing statistics prove that there is an  increasing number of people who start to rely on digital forums as their favourite sources of accessing news. As deliberated in the training workshop, the print media particulary newspaper whose survival has  been depending mainly on selling their daily or weekly hard copies will be jeorpadized as the customers resort to internet.

The debate on this challenge was serious but at last, it was agreed by the editors and trainers of the training that investigative journalism is what can assure the survival of print media in these internet era. As the websites and bloggers publish breaking news on the daily events and other occurencies at any time the want, print media can survival by coming up with an in-depth investigative stories in the following morning thus will be able to sustain their customers. Without doing investigative journalism, print media will be finding themselves publishing stories which have been prempted by the  bloggers and websites.

With this lesson  learnt arose from the deliberation of the training, frequent trainings on investigative journalism are highly recommended. MISA TAN and other media stakeholders are advised to consider it.
